Adobe AIR 2 and Flash Player 10.1 Betas now Available

Now Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.0 betas available on Adobe labs.Direct links for Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.0. This is the first time adobe simultaneously released the desktop (AIR) and browser (Flash Player) runtimes for all three platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux) at once, which is a great milestone for the Flash Platform.

Both Adobe AIR 2.0 and Flash Player 10.1:

- boast support for multi-touch and gestures (yes, you’d need a machine with a touch screen)
- include a global error handler, which enables devs to write a single handler to process all runtime errors
- (finally) support local microphone access, so you’ll no longer need to first pass through a server in order to record audio locally on both Flash Platform runtimes

Lots of new stuff in Flash Player 10.1 including the multi-touch APIs, the performance gains, and some new networking APIs.Adobe Flash Player 10.1 now also leverages hardware decoding of H.264 video on Windows PCs, netbooks and mobile devices.

Also new in Adobe AIR 2.0 and worthy of a mention:

- Native process API: enables apps to communicate with native applications on local machines
- Mass storage device detection: plug in your Flip camera or that USB stick you got as a gift at the last conference you attended, and AIR 2 applications will be able to detect them
- Open document API: with it, AIR apps can ‘ask’ the OS what the default application is associated with files and function accordingly
- Improved socket support: think AIR-powered local servers and P2P apps
- Speedier WebKit: updated version that includes a faster JavaScript engine and new HTML5/CSS3 capabilities

After shipping AIR 1.0, many of developers challenged us to open the runtime up even more by, for example, allowing communication with native processes and providing enhanced networking support. With AIR 2, our goal from the outset was to remove limitations in the runtime that prevented developers from building their applications.

Improved ActionScript Spell Checker Released(SPL 1.2 Released)

A while ago I wrote a post listed a more than 10 spell checker components for RIA applications. SPL is one of them. Lanny McNie just released the 1.2 version of it. Here is what McNie said:

I’m happy to announce that we just released version 1.2 of our client-side, check-as-you-type, spell checking library for ActionScript 3 projects in Flash, Flex, or AIR. This version includes some significant updates including:

* rewritten spelling suggestions algorithm, which is faster and returns better results
* better support for AIR, and addition of an AIRMenuHelper class to reinsert editing options
* enhanced multi-line highlighting
* improved support for languages other than English
* RegExpHighlighter source code, which highlights matches for a regular expression in a text field (as seen at regexr.com)
* various minor bug fixes and enhancements

Convert XML to SWF without using Flash(swfmill)

swfmill is a command line XML to SWF to XML processor using SWFML, an XML vocabulary closely modeled after the SWF format. It i.e. it does not check if shapes you draw are closed, etc., so make sure to thoroughly test SWFs you make with it. Unlike the “simple” vocabulary, “basic” (like SWF) uses twips as a unit instead of pixels. 20 twips are one pixel.

For example,

That’s the most basic SWF you can make. It’s 320 by 240 pixels, tries to run at 12 frames per second, and has a white background. Note the tag, except of the and tags, all other tags belong into one. For simplicity’s sake, most examples below will assume you know that, and won’t include the header explicitly.

If you save this XML code into a file sample.swfml (it could also be sample.xml or in fact anything else), you can compile it into a binary SWF with the following commandline:

swfmill simple sample.swfml sample.swf

The Actionscript Conference (TAC) is a community conference with the focus on Flash Platform. Attendants will see themselves immersed in a day of learning, knowledge exchange, and networking. TAC aims to bring topics on Actionscript 3.0, Flash development, Enterprise Flex 3 and 4, AIR, Integrating of Flash and other Platforms, and building Rich Internet Application to its audience.
